Vaginal cancer is a rare but serious type of gynecologic cancer that develops in the tissues of the vagina—the muscular canal connecting the uterus to the external genitals.
Vaginal cancer is a rare but serious type of gynecologic cancer that develops in the tissues of the vagina—the muscular canal connecting the uterus to the external genitals. Though uncommon, early detection and expert treatment significantly increase survival and quality of life.
At Konkan Cancer Centre , we offer advanced diagnostic tools, multidisciplinary cancer treatment, and personalized care plans for women facing vaginal cancer. Our team of experienced oncologists, gynecologic surgeons, radiologists, and cancer counselors work together to provide complete support throughout your cancer journey.
Vaginal cancer begins when healthy cells in the vaginal lining mutate and grow uncontrollably, forming a tumor. It typically affects women over 60, but it can occur at any age. Left untreated, these cancer cells can invade nearby organs or spread (metastasize) to distant areas like the lungs, liver, or bones.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma – Most common type, originates in the flat cells lining the vagina.
Adenocarcinoma – Arises from the glandular (mucus-producing) cells inside the vaginal lining.
Melanoma – Rare and aggressive, begins in pigment-producing cells.
Sarcoma – Originates in connective tissues or muscles of the vaginal wall.
At Konkan Cancer Centre, we offer complete evaluation and accurate cancer typing to tailor the most effective treatment plan.
Understanding risk factors can help in early screening and prevention. The most common contributors include:
Human Papillomavirus (HPV): A leading cause of vaginal and cervical cancers.
Age: Risk increases significantly after age 60.
Smoking: Tobacco use compromises immune function and increases mutation risk.
History of Cervical Cancer: Prior gynecologic cancers elevate your chances.
Diethylstilbestrol (DES) Exposure: Women whose mothers took DES during pregnancy.
Weakened Immune System: Due to illness or medications like steroids or chemotherapy.
If you have any of these risk factors, consult a gynecologic oncologist at Kolhapur Cancer Centre for screening and counseling.
Vaginal cancer often presents with subtle symptoms in its early stages. Paying attention to persistent changes in your body is critical.
Unusual vaginal bleeding (after menopause, intercourse, or between periods)
Foul-smelling or watery vaginal discharge
Pelvic discomfort or pain
Painful intercourse
A visible or palpable vaginal lump
Painful or frequent urination
Constipation or painful bowel movements
Swelling of the legs (lymphatic obstruction)
Note: These symptoms may mimic other gynecological issues. Early medical evaluation is essential. At Konkan Cancer Centre, our specialists provide compassionate and accurate assessment for any gynecologic concern.
At Konkan Cancer Centre, we follow a step-by-step diagnostic protocol to ensure accurate staging and appropriate treatment planning:
Thorough discussion of symptoms, history, and risk factors with a senior cancer specialist.
Visual and manual inspection of vaginal tissues, cervix, uterus, and lymph nodes.
Transvaginal Ultrasound: Assesses masses or thickening in vaginal walls.
MRI & CT Scans: Detect tumor size, spread, and organ involvement.
PET Scan: Highlights areas of active cancer, especially in advanced stages.
Punch or Incisional Biopsy: Tissue sample taken for microscopic analysis.
Colposcopy-Guided Biopsy: Enhanced visualization to target abnormal areas.
Pap Smear: May detect abnormal vaginal or cervical cells.
Blood Work: Evaluates overall health and possible tumor markers.
Early diagnosis is the cornerstone of successful treatment. If you’re experiencing unusual symptoms, visit Konkan Cancer Centre for prompt evaluation.
Accurate staging and grading help determine the best treatment pathway:
Stage I: Cancer confined to the vaginal wall
Stage II: Spread to surrounding vaginal tissues
Stage III: Involvement of pelvic wall or regional lymph nodes
Stage IV: Spread to bladder, rectum, or distant organs
Grade 1 (Low-grade): Cells look more like normal tissue, grow slowly
Grade 2 (Moderate-grade): More abnormal in appearance and faster-growing
Grade 3 (High-grade): Aggressive, abnormal cells that spread quickly
Each woman’s condition is unique, and we build a personalized treatment plan based on cancer type, stage, age, and overall health.
Local Excision: Removes the tumor and a margin of surrounding tissue.
Vaginectomy: Partial or complete removal of the vaginal wall if cancer is extensive.
Lymph Node Dissection: Checks for cancer spread.
External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT): High-energy rays targeted from outside the body.
Brachytherapy: Internal radiation delivered directly to the tumor site for maximum effect.
Used for advanced or metastatic cancer.
May be combined with radiation (chemoradiation).
Administered via IV or oral pills.
For tumors with specific genetic mutations or molecular markers.
Offers more precise treatment with fewer side effects than chemotherapy.
Treatments can have side effects, but our supportive care team helps manage them effectively.

Regular check-ups, pelvic exams, and imaging tests post-treatment help monitor recurrence and manage late side effects.
